I have organised a public meeting for this Saturday so local residents can find out more about Adelaide University’s latest revegetation plans for Glenthorne Farm. Last month Adelaide University released a management plan for 100 hectares of historic Glenthorne at O’Halloran Hill as part of a ‘Mt Lofty Woodland Initiative’.
While many locals welcome the plan, my concern is how the University proposes to pay for the $20 million initiative?
The Glenthorne community meeting will be held on Saturday 19 July, 3.00-5.00pm at the Christ Church Anglican Hall, 1708 Main South Road, O’Halloran Hill (corner Lander Road).
Speakers include Adelaide University’s Assoc. Prof. David Paton.

Today’s COAG announcement failed to offer immediate relief for the Lower Murray. There appears to be no sense of urgency among Federal and State leaders. One example was the stumbling block over SA’s proposal to lift the current restriction of 4 per cent on water trading per year. While it was supported by other States, Victoria opposed the move. In the end, COAG agreed to keep the 4 per cent ceiling until the end of 2009 when it would go to 6 per cent. Victorian Premier John Brumby had promised business and agricultural interests in his State that he would not budge on the cap. This is despite water trading being critical in releasing more environmental flows for the Murray.

Lecture Overview:
Within a generation, urban transport systems will change forever under a tsunami of social, economic and environmental factors. Consider our changing demographics, an ageing population, Peak oil and the wane of liquid fossil fuels, not to mention the imperative to adapt to climate change. In a fascinating visit to the near-future, Michael Taylor looks at how this will affect Adelaide and speculates on a number of questions. Will cars still rule the roads? Can buses meet the new demands? Is rail-based transport the saviour? What will life be like with these new services? Can we afford the new technology and infrastructure? What if we can’t?

Budget Estimates Committee hearings finished today. It’s an opportunity for MPs to question relevant Ministers about issues in the State Budget. But once again the process are so tightly controlled by the Government that it’s impossible to ask more than a few questions on the most controversial points. For example, just one hour to examine the entire Families and Communities budget including the State’s failure to care for abused children. Liberals did it to Labor, now Labor do it to the Liberals (and the Independents). With the rows of senior public servants trooping into Parliament to give the Minister information he or she sees fit to disclose, the Budget Committees are a bit like Mugabe’s election celebrations – a meaningless, unedifying spectacle.

I believe the State Government’s new water prices are a missed opportunity to reward water conservation. The increase will do nothing to encourage water conservation. It merely ensures that garden watering restrictions continue. The Government have put into effect a three-tier pricing structure; an improvement on the two-tier pricing structure we had until earlier this week. But there are two problems with this. First, everyone still pays a supply charge of around $160 per year whether they use water or not. Secondly, there is little incentive to save water, since the new Government pricing has the same price for people using between 121 and 500kL per year. Since the metropolitan household average is around 250kL per year, almost everyone will pay the same for water when they turn on the tap. It makes it hard to save much money for those who are frugal with water.
