GM wheat and barley trials for Adelaide

May 23rd, 2008 by Kris

The University of Adelaide has applied for permission to trial genetically-modified wheat and barley at Glenthorne Farm in Adelaide’s southern suburbs.

It’s unusual that a trial of this kind should be carried out so close to heavily populated areas. I have called on the State Government to assure residents that there is no health risk from inhaling pollen from these experimental wheat and barley lines.

Concerns have been raised that GM wheat and barley lines contain antibiotic resistant marker genes. The British Medical Association has warned of a possibility of increased pools of antibiotic-resistant bacteria from such genes.”

The request for the GM trials currently sits with the Department of Health in Canberra.

I support the continuation of a ban on growing full-scale GM crops in SA..

Stricter controls wanted on ‘Pokie Palaces’

May 20th, 2008 by Kris

The outcome of a survey I conducted in my electorate of Mitchell shows that many people want to see stricter controls on poker machine operating hours.

Fifty seven per cent of the one thousand respondents to the survey agreed poker machine venues should closed between midnight and noon. Currently, poker machine operators can open 18 hours a day.

Even a modest proposal to force venues to close between 3am and 9am was rejected recently by the Government.

Forty seven per cent of respondents wanted to see the complete removal of poker machines in SA over time.

Tricks to lure problem gamblers

May 8th, 2008 by Kris

Today I introduced legislation to ban certain features of poker machines that are clearly designed to suck in problem gamblers.

The evidence is now clear. The pokie industry relies on certain tricks and deceptions in design features to suck in pokie addicts. And these tricks work.

Features such as ‘free spins’, ‘unbalanced reels’ and ‘multiple lines’ all contribute to problem gamblers losing more. Some people get sucked in by these so-called ‘bonus features’; they think they are getting something for nothing.
But all of these features are a con, because payout rates are essentially uniform for every machine in the State, according to law.
My legislation would ban these tricks designed to prey on problem gamblers.

Local Government superannuation

May 7th, 2008 by Kris

I was pleased to see that new legislation on Local Government’s superannuation scheme allows members working in Councils to have a choice on the kind of fund in which their money is invested. It gives them a say in avoiding unethical or non-sustainable investments. It’s high time that this applied to all public sector superannuation schemes.
