Rann says no to a commission against corruption

February 28th, 2008 by Kris

The Rann Government today voted against my legislation to establish an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).

Setting up such a commission will help to dispel any clouds of suspicion over conflict of interests, misappropriation of government funds, and any other accusations of corruption that hit the headlines from time to time. Yet this State Government continues to ignore the rumours and allegations, and insists an independent commission against corruption isn’t warranted.

An ICAC has proved effective in uncovering corruption in NSW, WA and Queensland. There’s no reason why it wouldn’t be successful here.

February 27th, 2008 by Kris

Speakers for my community forum on the future of the Mitsubishi site have been finalised..
The forum, on Sunday 16th March, 2-4pm at the Marion Cultural Centre, will give the community the chance to discuss the future of Mitsubishi’s Tonsley site once the car manufacturer closes down next month. It will open with a community brainstorming session, followed by the following speakers.
Felicity-ann Lewis, Mayor of Marion Council
Hon. John Hill MP, Minister for the Southern Suburbs
Prof. Andrew Beer, Flinders University School of Geography, Population and Environmental Management (Prof Beer conducted research on the economic impacts of Mitsubishi’s closure of its Lonsdale plant)
Suggestions from the forum will be disseminated widely to ensure the local community’s ideas are heard in any future development plans for the Mitsubishi site.

The Rann Government’s WorkChoices legislation

February 27th, 2008 by Kris

The Rann Government’s moves to cut injured workers pay compares to John Howard’s WorkChoices legislation. Here we have a Labor Government authorising claim managers to dump injured workers onto the dole after two and half years on WorkCover. This is the kind of anti-worker legislation that Labor MPs and the Unions fought so hard to defeat when John Howard introduced his WorkChoices legislation.

The WorkCover changes proposed by Mike Rann in Parliament yesterday almost eliminate lump sum payments for workers who are willing to get off the WorkCover payroll early. And an injured worker’s pay will be cut to 80 per cent after only three months!

I imagine there will be enormous Labor backbench unrest against these changes. However, MPs’ jobs are on the line if they cross the floor, so Rann will be able to steamroll the legislation through Parliament with the help of the Liberals.

Rally in Adelaide for Uyghur human rights

February 26th, 2008 by Kris

Ms Rabiya Kadeer, the democratically-elected leader of the World Uyghur Congress, briefed State MPs in Parliament today on the suffering of her people under the authoritarian rule of Communist China. The Uyghur people’s homeland of East Turkestan was annexed by the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Ms Kadeer has travelled the world actively campaigning for the human rights of the Uyghur people. After the briefing, Ms Kadeer attended a rally on the steps of Parliament House with about 70 representatives of the Uyghur community living in Adelaide.

Garnaut Report our ‘Inconvenient Truth’

February 22nd, 2008 by Kris

The Conservation Council of South Australia has likened Professor Ross Garnaut’s Climate Change Review to the Australia’s equivalent of Al Gore’s film ‘An Inconvenient Truth’.

The inconvenient truth that Garnaut identifies is that Australia is exceptionally sensitive to impacts of Climate Change. The report highlights that the earlier we act, the better off Australia will be.

Here’s a link to the CCSA response to Prof Garnaut’s report:

What’s the future for the Mitsubishi site?

February 21st, 2008 by Kris

There has been much comment about Mitsubishi’s decision to close its Adelaide plant next month. How can we best use the site to ensure it creates jobs in the southern suburbs? I have called for a National Centre for Excellence for Solar Panel Technology on the site. The large roof space at Mitsubishi could be used to showcase and implement solar energy, and possibly water harvesting technologies. At the same time, the car parking areas would be an ideal site for a road/rail interchange, taking southern commuters’ cars off South Road and Anzac Highway. To discuss ideas on the future of the Mitsubishi site I have organised a forum on Sunday 16 March at the Marion Cultural Centre, 2-4pm.
The forum will start by inviting community members to have their say on how the site could best be developed. Three experts then will comment on their ideas. They will be authorities in economic development, public transport and planning. Ideas from the forum will be sent to members of the Government and Opposition, and promoted to the media.
