Protection for religious folk

December 20th, 2006 by Kris

I will introduce amendments to the State Government’s Equal Opportunity Bill to make it an offence to discriminate against someone on the grounds of their religious beliefs.
The Labor Government is offering no protection to people refused jobs, or service in shops, because of their religion.
At present a shopowner can say ‘dirty Jew’ or ‘dirty Muslim’ and kick them out of the shop. I think that’s wrong.
The Rann Government deliberately left out religion as grounds for discrimination from its Equal Opportunity Bill because of views expressed by mainstream Christian Churches.

More time needed on bus tickets

December 11th, 2006 by Kris

As the member for Mitchell I have written to the Minister for Transport asking him to extend the travel time allowed on public transport tickets from two to three hours.
Since October when Torrens Transit changed the bus routes in my electorate, constituents have been contacting me to say it’s taking longer to complete their journeys on the one bus ticket.
Many passengers are finding their trip has been considerably increased since the Marion Access bus was removed and they’re forced to transfer buses at Marion Shopping Centre.
What do you think? Should tickets on Adelaide’s buses, trains and trams be extended from the two-hour expiry limit to three hours?

The future of multiculturalism?

December 11th, 2006 by Kris

The Howard Government is keen to change the view of Australia as a ‘multicultural’ society to one with a “shared national identity” .
In a speech in Canberra last week, the parliamentary secretary for multicultural affairs, Andrew Robb, said the term multiculturalism was “too vague”. He would prefer to it replaced with a notion that promoted “a sense of shared values and a common national identity”.
What do you think?

Water: Get Ready to Pay More!

December 11th, 2006 by Kris

Water restrictions introduced to Adelaide apply mainly to domestic users. It has little impact on industry. This is despite Adelaide homes using only 11 per cent of the water used in the state.

What’s needed is a water pricing system that encourages everyone to conserve water.

I am calling for a tiered pricing structure where the big users of water will pay considerably more for their water than a householder who is careful with their usage. At the moment, we have a system that does not reward the efficient water user.

Do you think the cost of water is the best way to conserve our dwindling water supplies?

Iraq: Withdraw or Wind Down?

December 7th, 2006 by Kris

The Iraq Study Group, led by the former secretary of state James Baker and the former Democratic congressman Lee Hamilton, is expected to be delivered to President Bush next Wednesday (6/12).

According to the New York Times, the 10-member bipartisan panel has reached a consensus, after eight months of discussions, that the US should wind down its military commitment and make clear the US troop presence is not open-ended.

The panel avoided a specific timetable for withdrawal - something the Democrats on the panel wanted but the president strongly opposes.

Should US troops be withdrawn now, or should they stay to train Iraqi security forces?
